The Little Red Soldier

This vase depicts a grandmother tying on the red armband of her grandchild, who is dressed in a military uniform and cap. His older sister, holding a pail, is prepared to go out to work in the fields. Although Red Guards were usually high-school aged students, this vase illustrates the political militarization of even the youngest school children, who were also expected to participate in the revolutionary cause.
