Down with the “stinking old ninth”

Red Guards, many of whom were high school and college students, quickly turned against their teachers, professors, and administrators— anyone whom they considered to have elitist, bourgeois tendencies. This sculpture depicts a struggle session against a “stinking old ninth,” a derogatory term used to describe intellectuals, who had been classified as a “black” category.
